On February 2nd 2023 our friend and colleague Pete Reed was killed in Ukraine by Russian missile while rendering aid to an injured civilian.
He was a former US Marine Corps rifleman who served for two deployments to Helmand Afghanistan before traveling cross country and living in the west as a ski instructor. He started his humanitarian career working with Team Rubicon after Hurricane Sandy hit his home state of New Jersey. In the summer of 2014, he assisted in the training of 33 Haitian EMTS. In late 2015 he left Jackson Hole WY to begin medical training operations in Northern Iraq.
Eventually, he would lead medical teams with the Kurdish Peshmerga then collocate with the Iraqi Special Forces for the duration of the Battle for Mosul treating over 10,000 trauma patients in the newly formed Trauma Stabilization Points. During the Battle, while still operating frontline clinics, Pete would work with others to found and serve as the president of Global Response Management (GRM).
Since 2017, Pete has participated in GRM operations in Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and Poland. He splits his time between working on an ambulance as a Paramedic and in the mountains hiking and skiing. Pete considers the formation of GRM as the “proudest achievement of his life.”
In Pete’s role as Global Outreach Doctors Ukraine Country Director he accomplished very important work to help our Ukraine brothers and sisters. GoDoc will continue this service to Ukraine in his memory.
